Hospital reimagined

District Hospital Emmendingen

For improved healthcare: The District Hospital Emmendingen is undergoing extensive renovation and functional development while in operation. Our concept optimizes existing structures, enhances working conditions, and creates a contemporary, sustainable environment for care and operations.

The district hospital in Emmendingen from the 1970s faces the task of adapting the structural and functional elements to today's requirements of healthcare services. The goal is to develop the hospital operation to be future-proof, strengthen the quality of care, and create stable conditions for ongoing operations.

The concept focuses on optimizing patient care, establishing an "Surgical Medical Aftercare and Supply Center" (SMASC) in Building A, modernizing the building structures, improving energy efficiency, and operational processes. In addition to meeting all required planning and renovation measures, we identified additional optimization potentials and were awarded the contract based on our design concept in the VgV tendering process.

Improved Patient Care and Working Environment
A central part of the concept is the improvement of the quality of stay - both for patients and staff. This is achieved through optimized pathways within the hospital and a better logistical connection of the nursing stations. The flexible spatial and functional concept also enables future-proof use and adaptability. At the same time, synergies between the building parts contribute to an efficient utilization of space and resources. The existing three-bed rooms are being restructured into contemporary single and double rooms with private wet rooms. This improves both comfort and the quality of nursing care. The reconstruction takes place during normal hospital operation. Clearly defined construction phases minimize disruption to stationary processes.

Energetic Renovation
The facades of Building A are largely in their original state from 1973 and therefore need to be adapted to current standards. At the same time, they are intended to undergo a design upgrade that fits into the overall appearance of the district hospital. Special attention was paid to the operating costs of facade maintenance. The energy concept considers the existing building technology and further develops it.

About the Hospital
The district hospital in Emmendingen is a basic and standard care hospital, currently with 263 beds. Approximately 12,000 patients are treated annually as inpatients, in addition to around 20,000 outpatient patients from the district and region. With approximately 700 employees - including 260 nursing staff and 100 doctors - it is one of the largest employers in the city and the district of Emmendingen.
